119. Birth of the promised seed.

Sam Matthews. K

'Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son and they will call him Immanuel.' (Isaiah 7:14) God had promised redemption through the 'seed of the woman' and in the fullness of time, 'God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. ... The angel said to her," .... You will be with child and give birth to a son and you are to call him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord will give him the throne of his father David and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever: his kingdom will never end." "How will this be," Mary asked the angel," since I am a virgin?" The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will be upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God." (Luke 1:26-35) 'All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with a child and give birth to a son and they will call him Immanuel" - which means, "God with us."' (Matthew 1:22-23) God spoke a word and it took on the ovum and triggered a cell division to form an embryo to which was granted a spirit which happened to be the eternal Spirit of the second person of the Trinity. He gave up his glory and humbled himself to enter the womb of a woman to become man. 'The word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the Only begotten, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.'( John 1:14) Heaven calls him the 'Son of Man' while we on earth call him the 'Son of God'. Fully God, fully man! But the Gnostics (The Greek word gnosis means 'knowledge' and the Gnostics were an intellectual elite who balked at the Christian concept of God becoming a man) denied that a pure God could take on a human body because they believed that the physical body was intrinsically evil. But Jesus proved that it was possible to live a holy life in a human body because the problem is not with the body but with our spirits. John lashed out against the Gnostics and he wrote this to warn the Church: 'Dear friends, do not believe every spirit but test the spirits to see if they are from God ... Every spirit that acknowledge that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the Antichrist , which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.'(1 John 4:1-3) At a time when Christmas is being changed into a seasonal festival and greeting others in the name of Christ is becoming an offense, let's put back the true spirit into Christmas. Christ is the reason for this season! Amen.
