Jesus asked the Pharisees, "What do you think about Christ? Whose son is he?" "The Son of David," they replied. - (Matthew 22:41) They knew the Scriptures well, yet they failed to recognise the "Son of David" but a Canaanite woman did! She came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me!" - (Matthew 15:22) Jesus was surprised to hear a Gentile woman call him, "Son of David", that he decided to test her, only to find that her faith was well founded! Isn't it comical that the Pharisees who diligently studied the Scriptures missed him altogether, while a Gentile woman who knew nothing about Jewish Scriptures, perceived Jesus to be the "Son of David"! How true was the statement of Jesus, when he said to the Pharisees: "You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life." - (John 5:39-40) And when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed him, including the children, shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David" - (Matthew 21:9) but the chief priests and the teachers of the law were indignant ! Didn't they read in Scripture: "Rejoice greatly ... See your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey ...!' - (Zechariah 9:9)
God had promised David to raise up one of his descendants who will rule forever! "I will raise up your offspring... and I will establish his kingdom ... and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his Father and he will be my son." - (2 Samuel 7:12-14) And in the fullness of time, was born the Son of David! And Mary was told by angel Gabriel, "The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." - (Luke 1:32-33) The gospel is therefore about a King from the 'house and line of David' - (Luke 2:4). That according to Paul is the gist (summary) of the gospel ! "Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead descended from David. This is my gospel." - (2 Timothy 2:8) - 'The gospel God promised beforehand through his prophets in Holy Scriptures, regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by the resurrection from the dead.' - (Romans 1:2-4) Jesus was fully human, being the "Son of David", yet in spirit he was fully God, being the "Son of God". Hallelujah!
