Its interesting to note that two names stand out in the genealogy of Jesus, that of Abraham and David! *'A record of the genealogy Jesus Christ, THE SON OF DAVID, THE SON OF ABRAHAM ...'* - (Matthew 1:1) Why wasn't Jesus called the "Son of Adam" or for that matter, of anyone before Abraham? Because the gospel was first announced to Abraham! *'The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: "All nations will be blessed through you."*- (Galatians 3:8) Abraham understood that it's through his *seed* (or offspring) the promise would be fulfilled! *"To your offspring* (or seed) *I will give this land ..."* - (Genesis 12:7) *"... and through your offspring* (or seed) *all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me."* - (22:18) It was an impossible *proposition* (proposed plan of action) for all the nations on earth to be blessed through Abraham's direct descendant Issac! Therefore, Abraham believed that the seed spoken of was the Messiah or Christ! *'The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The scriptures does not say "and to seeds" meaning many people, but "and to your seed", meaning one person, who is Christ.'* - (Galatians 3:16)
God had chosen Abraham to lay the foundation for a new humanity following the fall and the flood
and by faith he became the heir of the world. *'Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world through the righteouness that comes by faith.'* - (Romans 4:13) Yet it was another impossible proposition for Abraham to inherit the whole earth through his direct descendant Issac! Therefore, Abraham believed that the seed spoken of was the Messiah or Christ! Abraham rejoiced not only at the birth of Issac but also at the thought of Christ's birth! Jesus said to the Jews gathered around him, *"Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad." "You are not fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!" "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"* - (John 8:56-58) Isn't it amazing that the One who made the promise to Abraham and his descendants had to be born as the *"Son of Abraham"* to fulfill the promise!! The birth of Christ was indeed an awesome miracle that made both propositions that seemed impossible, a reality! *Jesus, the "Son of Abraham"* has become a blessing to the nations of the earth and he has become the heir of the world, as promised to Abraham! Amen.
