178. Spirit of prophecy.

Sam Matthews. K

"He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears and he will tell you what is yet to come." (John 16:13) Today's Prophecy is tomorrow's history! God who is Omniscient (all knowing), knows the end from the beginning and he predicts the future with absolute accuracy to let the world know that he alone is God! The prophet Isaiah had challenged the 'gods' of this world to predict anything. "Bring in your idols to tell us what is going to happen ... declare to us the things to come, tell us what the future holds, so we may know that you are gods." (Isaiah 41:22-23) The seers and fortune tellers of this world predict the future by evil spirits (Acts 16:16) and some false prophets are just speaking the imaginations of their own minds ( Ezekiel 13:2-3) but the prophets of God spoke when the Spirit of prophecy came upon them. Infact, it was not them speaking but the Spirit through them. 'Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the Prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.' (1 Peter 1:20-21) God could even speak through the mouth of a sorcerer by just putting his oracle on his mouth! 'The Lord put a message in Balaam's mouth and said, "Go back to Balak and give him this message." (Numbers 23:5) 'Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he did not resort to sorcery as at other times ... the Spirit of God came upon him and he uttered his oracle... " (24:1-2) Prophecy is proof of God's control over history. This world will come to its destined end, the way God has revealed it to his servants the prophets! 'Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.' (Amos 3:7) Hence, 'the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place.' (Revelation 1:1) The words that the Spirit spoke to John, were the words of Christ himself (Revelation 2:1), which the Spirit heard Jesus say to his bride, the Church but only 'he who has an ear can hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches' ( vs 7). Have we heard the voice of the Spirit yet? Infact, the testimony of God in our hearts about his Son (1 John 5: 10) is the utterance of the Spirit. That is why Scripture says 'the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.' (Revelation 19:10) Be unashamed to testify Jesus for in doing so we activate the gift of prophecy. Amen.
