115. Satan stands condemned.

"Now is the time for judgement on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out."(John 12:31) Jesus was not speaking of a judgement that would happen at the end of times but was speaking of the judgement of the world that would happen with his death. The context in which he said this was soon after the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where he was given a rapturous welcome because he had gained popularity after raising Lazarus from the dead. (Vs 17-18) But at the height of his popularity, when some Greeks wanted to meet him, probably to felicitate him, (Vs 20-22) he didn't seem interested because drawing large crowds was not the goal of his mission but to die for the sins of the world. So he spoke of his imminent death to the onlookers and the judgement that would result out of it. "Now my heart is troubled and what shall I say? 'Father save me from this hour'? No! It was for this reason I came to this hour ..."(vs 27) With his death, God has judged the sins of the world and condemned it. 'For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, but God did by sending his Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law may be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.' (Romans 8:3-4) Since God has already judged the sin of the world with the death of Christ, the judgement to come will be for rejecting the 'Lamb of God who took away the sin of the world'. (John 1:29) And with the judgement of sin, the prince of this world, the devil now stands condemned ! The Holy Spirit bears witness to this truth. 'When he ( the Holy Spirit) comes, he will convict the world of guilt ... in regard to judgement, because the prince of this world stands condemned."(John 16:8-11) The earth and it's inhabitants will be judged for accommodating a fugitive. Even by the law of our land, to give refuge to a criminal is to share in his crime and they will be prosecuted too. A third of the angels that fell with Lucifer have become the 'gods of this world' and the trumpet judgements which will destroy a third of everything on earth (Revelation 8:7-12) are meant to judge the inhabitants of the earth for accommodating those whom God has condemned. But the day is coming when they, together with their prince, will be driven out of this world. 'In that day the Lord will punish the powers in the heaven above ... They will be herded together like prisoners in a dungeon; they will be shut up in prison and be punished after many days.'( Isaiah 24:21-22) 'And I saw an angel coming down from heaven ... He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil or Satan and bound him for a thousand years.'( Revelation 20:1-2) 'Do not give the devil a foothold.' (Ephesians 4:27) 'Submit yourselves, then to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.'( James 4:7) Amen.
